Hundreds of ancient evaporation pools of all shapes and sizes lay at the foot of a hill in Maras, Peru. Cared for and passed down by a small number of harvesters since the 1400s, these pools provide the locals with salt and a rich history.
A small natural stream feeds these pools. Once one has reached its limit, it is dammed, evaporated, and harvested using simple, time-honored methods.
Not much has changed in the area in the last few hundred years, and the salt doesn’t typically make its way very far out of the valley - until now. Joining forces with small producer cooperatives in the Maras region, we have gained access to this pristine salt and made it available to you.
